Rosa Lebensboym, better known by her pen name Anna Margolin, is often considered one of the finest American Yiddish poets. But for over 40 years, she made her living as a journalist, working for various Yiddish newspapers like the Fraye arbeter shtime, the Forverts, and the Tog. As a columnist, foreign correspondent, editor, and translator, Lebensboym’s work pushed and critiqued the boundaries of women’s writing, even while also being constrained by these same boundaries. This talk will explore Lebensboym’s life and career, and what they reveal about the roles female journalists played in the development of the American Yiddish press.
